Spotlight on Inclusion
This publication from MEC is a set of summaries from our 2024-2025 Seminar Series covering anti-racism, disability, intersectionality, unconscious bias and artificial intelligence.
Taken together, the seminars reveal that inclusion in music education is not a single initiative but a systemic culture - one that recognises difference as a resource rather than a challenge.
Equity cannot be achieved by goodwill alone; it requires redesign. From the accessibility of digital platforms to the framing of assessments, from teacher training to curriculum storytelling, inclusion must be built in, not added on.

MEC's Response to the DfE's
Curriculum and Assessment Review
MEC has responded to the final report of the Curriculum and Assessment Review.
Our recommendations:
-
Adopt a broader definition of musical literacy beyond notation, recognising diverse skills and removing structural barriers to engagement.
-
Undertake a full, substantive overhaul of GCSE Music that embeds cultural inclusion, updates assessment, and aligns with KS3 and post-16 pathways.
-
Strengthen continuity across KS1–4 by clearly aligning curriculum, assessment and progression expectations.
-
Make diversity, equity and representation explicit within music curriculum content, pedagogy and exemplar materials.
-
Invest in teacher training, time and professional development to ensure high-quality, inclusive delivery.
-
Recognise music as both an academic discipline and a vital social and cultural practice, not optional enrichment.

Music is vital...
The Music Education Council exists to support those who understand this to be true. We’re a membership organisation that brings a diverse group of individuals and organisations with interests and expertise in music education into an inclusive digital setting. Whether you are a music teacher, animateur, music therapist, researcher, clinical practitioner, student, professional, community musician, active amateur or just have a personal interest… we’re inclusive in the widest sense and there’ll be something of value for you in MEC membership.
We provide a membership environment where educators can support everyone to connect, grow and thrive through music. But we’re also aware that there are still many barriers that exist to prevent people from being engaged in music education. With the help of the wider music education community - we know that we cannot work alone - we intend to dismantle these barriers.
And by becoming a MEC member you’re committing to help and support us do this important communal work. Not only are you part of the conversation, but you’re part of the solution.
